Bushmen Creation Legends

Bushmen Creation Legends
The bushmen of South Africa believe that in the beginning men and animals were endowed with speech. There existed a quarrelsome being named Hochigan who hated animals; he eventually disappeared, but with his departure the animals lost the power of speech. They also believe in a being as mischievous and full of tricks as the Coyote of North America; his representative on earth is the praying mantis. He is named Kaggen, or, alternatively, Cagn.
